Introduction to Montessori Academy Child Care
Montessori Academy delivers a Montessori Early Education and Preschool Program for children aged 0 – 6 years in a long day care format. Our mission is: “Preparing children for school and life.” Through our prepared learning environments, Montessori Materials, and teaching philosophy, we facilitate hands-on learning experiences designed to support each child’s unique developmental needs and interests. Our approach to education is scientifically based on the research findings of Doctor Maria Montessori regarding how children learn as they progress from birth to adulthood. Through our individualised learning programs and exceptional learning and play spaces, we empower our students with exceptional academic and wellbeing foundations. The ultimate goal of Montessori Education is to empower children with a love of learning and ignite their own inner teacher.
The Montessori Education Program
Montessori Academy’s Education Program for Infants, Toddlers and Preschoolers is child-centred and focused on providing students with the ideal learning environment, materials and guidance to achieve their full potential. In the Montessori classroom, children work in a thoughtfully prepared learning environment that is beautifully designed, organised by subject area, and appropriate to the age, interests and developmental stage of its students. Children enjoy freedom of movement and choice to explore the Montessori Materials in each curriculum area and discover learning through hands-on experience. The role of the Montessori Teacher within this setting is to observe and guide each student based on their developmental needs and interests. As children progress through the Montessori Education Program, they develop intense concentration, strong academic foundations, intrinsic motivation, social skills, care for the environment, and respect for others.
The Montessori Curriculum
Montessori Academy delivers a holistic curriculum that combines both the Montessori Curriculum and the Australian Government’s Early Years Learning Framework (EYLF). The Montessori Curriculum covers five key learning areas, including: Practical Life, Sensorial, Mathematics, Language and Culture. Each curriculum area comprises a curated suite of Montessori Materials that promote the gradual layering of knowledge through repetition and practice. The Montessori Materials increase in complexity in a logical sequence as children progress through the Montessori Curriculum. The EYLF compliments the Montessori Curriculum by providing children with excellent wellbeing foundations that encourage children to become confident and involved learning with a strong sense of identity, wellbeing and belonging. In this way, Montessori Academy delivers a complete early education and care program that nurtures children’s social, emotional, physical, spiritual and cognitive development.
Montessori Learning Materials
The foundation of the Montessori Curriculum are specially designed learning tools known as Montessori Materials. Montessori Materials are sensory based learning tools that are designed to provide children with opportunities to discover learning through repetition and practice. The materials are beautiful and simple to use, guiding children through the Montessori Curriculum, as they increase in complexity. Children are introduced to the Montessori Materials by the Montessori Educator, who will present the material to the child, and then invite the child to work with the material independently. The Montessori Materials are presented to the child in sequence from easiest to hardest and within the context of the other materials they will encounter as they progress through the Montessori Education Program. This clear sequence provides children with a logical pathway to learning that promotes the gradual layering of knowledge to establish foundational learning. As Doctor Maria Montessori stated: “Nothing goes into the mind that does not first go through the hands.”
