Shape Puzzles

The shape puzzles are a Montessori infant material designed to introduce young children to shapes and the primary colours. The shapes puzzle printable allows you to create your own 2D version of the Shapes Puzzle.

Home Lesson One: Labelling Single Shapes

  1. Print and laminate the puzzle cut-out and control sheets
  2. Cut out the shapes on the cut-out pages and place in a container
  3. Prepare your work space with a small rug or towel/bath mat
  4. Place the three individual shape control cards in a pile to the left
  5. Invite your child: “Come and see what I have to share”
  6. Take the top card from pile and lay it in front of the child
  7. Take the matching shape from the container and place it within the outline of the frame as you name the shape.
  8. Repeat for the remaining cards.

Home Lesson Two: Labelling Colours

  1. Repeat as above naming the colour instead of the shape
  2. A further extension is to combine the colour and the shape i.e. “the red square”

Home Lesson Three: Three Shapes Puzzle

  1. Print and laminate the puzzle cut-outs and control sheets
  2. Cut out the shapes and place in a container
  3. Prepare your work space with a small rug or towel/bath mat with the control card
  4. Invite your child: “Come and see what I have to share”
  5. Take the matching shape from the container and place it within the outline frame naming the shape and colour
  6. Repeat for the remaining shapes

Home Lesson Four: Three Circle Puzzle

  1. Print and laminate the puzzle cut out and control sheets
  2. Cut out the circles from the cut-out page and place in a container
  3. Invite your child to work: “Come and see what I have to share”
  4. On a small rug or towel/bath mat place the control card in front of your child
  5. Take the biggest circle from the container and place it within the outline frame, saying: “The biggest blue circle”
  6. Take the medium circle from the container and place it within the outline frame, saying: “A smaller blue circle”
  7. Take the smallest circle from the container and place it within the outline frame, saying: “The smallest blue circle”
