Water Safety For Kids – How To Play Safely In The Water

By Montessori Academy02/02/23

Many families are looking for ways to cool off and have fun in the water as the weather gets warmer. Water play can be an excellent way for kids to stay calm and have fun, whether at the beach, at the pool, or in your backyard. But it’s essential to keep safety in mind to ensure your child has a fun and safe experience.

Supervision

Adult supervision is the most important thing to remember regarding water safety. Children should always be within arm’s reach of an adult when they are in or near water. This is especially important for younger children and those who are not yet strong swimmers. Young children can drown in as little as a few centimetres of water, so ensure you stay close to them and be mindful of potential drowning hazards such as pools, ponds, baths, sinks, buckets, or pet drinking bowls.

Even if your child is a strong swimmer, it is important to supervise them to prevent accidents and injuries.

Sun Protection

Another important aspect of water safety is sun protection. Children’s skin is more sensitive to the sun’s ultraviolet radiation than adults, making them more susceptible to sunburns and skin damage. To protect your child from the sun, make sure they are wearing sunscreen with an SPF 30 or higher and that they are wearing protective clothing such as a hat, a shirt or a swimming suit with long sleeves, and sunglasses.

Teach Your Child To Swim

Teaching your child how to swim as early as possible is also essential. Go to the swimming pool or the beach often with your child so they get used to being in the water. It is also advised to enrol children in swimming lessons early. These lessons teach your child basic swimming skills and survival techniques. They can also be a great way to teach children about water safety and help them acquire the skills required to stay safe in the water.

Water Safety Devices

It’s also essential to have the appropriate safety devices, such as life jackets or floatation devices. These devices can help keep your child safe in the water, especially if they are not strong swimmers. It is also important to note that inflatable pool toys are not a substitute for life jackets.

Water Safety Rules

Establishing rules for your child to follow when they are in or near water is also essential. These rules should include not running near the pool, not diving into shallow water, and not swimming alone. Ensure your child understands these rules and why they are essential by talking about water safety rules before going to the swimming pool or the beach.

At Montessori Academy, children’s safety and well-being are our priority. That’s why we incorporate safety rules and procedures in our daily activities and ensure that well-trained staff supervise children. We believe providing children with safe and fun learning experiences is the key to their growth and development.
